Biography

Susan E. King is an associate professor of curriculum and pedagogy in the Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences (HSES). She joined the faculty in 1992 after completing doctoral study in Curriculum and Teaching in Physical Education at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. King began her teaching career in 1980 as a dance specialist at Bennett College in Greensboro, NC. She taught dance at North Carolina State University from 1986 to 1988, then served as a dance specialist for Kings Mountain (NC) Public Schools for one year. King teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in curriculum design, instructional methods, dance, and technology. Her research interests include the recruitment and retention of ethnic minorities, teacher reflection, professionalism, and the connection between physical activity and academic achievement. She serves the HSES department as Undergraduate Coordinator, Program Director for Physical Education, and Coordinator of the Physical Activity Instructional Program. She is a member of several editorial boards and is a reviewer for Program Recognition from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

King specializes in recruitment & retention of minority students & professionals, curriculum design, and instructional methods.
