Musa Wakhungu Olaka is a Librarian for African, Global and International Studies at University of Kansas. He has previously worked as a librarian for the Holocaust and Genocide Studies Center at University of South Florida before becoming the Assistant Library Director & Head of Information Services at Southeast Missouri State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Information Science and Learning Technologies from University of Missouri and previously worked as a librarian and as a teacher in Kenya and in Rwanda for more than 6 years. His research interests include: Information Policy, Human information Behavior, Library and Information Science Education, and Genocide Studies.
I consider participatory approach to teaching and learning as the best way to foster learning. I believe that transfer of knowledge is best achieved when learner/students engage in the actual performing of a given task. This means that these learners will tend to be able to function better in new environments by applying what they learnt. As a teacher, my work is to be a mentor and to let students have more hands-on approach on what they are learning. This is especially when using a problem based approach to help learners learn a given issue at hand.
In real world, students are always faced with complex problems that normally tend to be ill structured – meaning that there are multiple perspectives that one can look at the problem and there can also be multiple ways that one can use to solve the problem.
